MAGIC, MYSTERY, MASTERY: THE ART OF OAXACA
An exhibition in San Francisco
418 Sutter Street
September 22 to December 30, 2022
Sin Título Gallery is pleased to announce a group exhibition: Magic, Mystery, Mastery: The Art of Oaxaca.
Located in the state with which it shares its name, Oaxaca de Juárez (also known as Oaxaca City or simply Oaxaca) is one of the most important destinations in Mexico, owing to its cultural and artistic legacies. This 500 year-old city, founded by the Spanish but richly developed upon thousands of years of Zapotec and Mixtec civilizations, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Center and home to artists and artisans offering a unique cultural and artistic cross-pollination.
Oaxacan art seems to spring from some mysterious and magical place inhabited by dreams and inspiration from the ancient indigenous myths of pre-Columbian times. The artists in this exhibition marry those dreams with the Western European world in a seamless blend of cultures. These artists are truly masters of presenting this decidedly Oaxacan world view.

FINDING THE UNIVERSE IN OAXACA
by Gary Goldberg
As he interprets Oaxaca, Goldberg is inspired by the color field painters while remaining true to his vision of Oaxaca by highlighting the city’s ancient patina and depth. Goldberg’s photographs ask the viewer to decipher the image: what am I looking at, what is the scale?
Many of Goldberg’s photographs have been transformed into textiles using a dry felting process at Taller de Afelpado, San Agustín Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico. Each textile is hand made by a team of three artisans, often taking up to three weeks to complete. The wool used is dyed with natural pigments such as cochineal and indigo.
